Gas vs. Distension

There are two main types of bloating, and distinguishing between them helps identify the cause:

Gas Bloating (Functional):

  • Feels "gassy" and bubbly
  • Often relieved by burping or passing gas
  • Internal sensation of pressure
  • Your belly size may not change visibly
  • Usually related to swallowed air or fermentation

Distension (Visible Swelling):

  • Your abdomen visibly expands
  • Clothes feel tight or uncomfortable
  • Doesn't improve with gas release
  • Can be measured (waistline increases)
  • Often related to gut motility issues

Many people experience both types, but identifying which is dominant helps target treatment.
