Gas vs. Distension
There are two main types of bloating, and distinguishing between them helps identify the cause:
Gas Bloating (Functional):
- Feels "gassy" and bubbly
- Often relieved by burping or passing gas
- Internal sensation of pressure
- Your belly size may not change visibly
- Usually related to swallowed air or fermentation
Distension (Visible Swelling):
- Your abdomen visibly expands
- Clothes feel tight or uncomfortable
- Doesn't improve with gas release
- Can be measured (waistline increases)
- Often related to gut motility issues
Many people experience both types, but identifying which is dominant helps target treatment.
