Common Trigger #2: Swallowed Air

Aerophagia (swallowing air) is a surprisingly common cause of bloating. You may be swallowing excess air without realizing it.

Common causes:

  • Eating too quickly (not chewing thoroughly)
  • Drinking through straws
  • Chewing gum or sucking on hard candies
  • Carbonated beverages (soda, sparkling water)
  • Talking while eating
  • Smoking
  • Anxiety or stress (unconscious air swallowing)

The fix: Simple behavior modifications can significantly reduce gas bloating:

  • Eat slowly and mindfully
  • Chew food thoroughly (20-30 times per bite)
  • Avoid carbonation if sensitive
  • Manage stress and anxiety
  • Skip the gum and straws

This type of bloating typically appears within 30-60 minutes of eating and is relieved by burping.
