Common Trigger #2: Swallowed Air
Aerophagia (swallowing air) is a surprisingly common cause of bloating. You may be swallowing excess air without realizing it.
Common causes:
- Eating too quickly (not chewing thoroughly)
- Drinking through straws
- Chewing gum or sucking on hard candies
- Carbonated beverages (soda, sparkling water)
- Talking while eating
- Smoking
- Anxiety or stress (unconscious air swallowing)
The fix: Simple behavior modifications can significantly reduce gas bloating:
- Eat slowly and mindfully
- Chew food thoroughly (20-30 times per bite)
- Avoid carbonation if sensitive
- Manage stress and anxiety
- Skip the gum and straws
This type of bloating typically appears within 30-60 minutes of eating and is relieved by burping.
