Common Trigger #3: Slow Gut Motility
When food moves too slowly through your digestive system (slow transit), it has more time to ferment and produce gas.
Why motility slows:
- Constipation (fewer than 3 bowel movements per week)
- Low physical activity
- Medications (opioids, certain antidepressants, antacids)
- Dehydration
- Low fiber intake (or paradoxically, too much fiber too quickly)
- Hormonal changes (progesterone slows motility)
- Underlying conditions (hypothyroidism, diabetes)
Signs of slow motility bloating:
- Bloating worsens throughout the day
- Relief after bowel movements
- Feeling of incomplete evacuation
- Visible distension (not just gas)
Solutions focus on:
- Increasing movement and exercise
- Adequate hydration (8+ cups water daily)
- Fiber intake optimization
- Addressing underlying constipation
