Common Trigger #3: Slow Gut Motility

When food moves too slowly through your digestive system (slow transit), it has more time to ferment and produce gas.

Why motility slows:

  • Constipation (fewer than 3 bowel movements per week)
  • Low physical activity
  • Medications (opioids, certain antidepressants, antacids)
  • Dehydration
  • Low fiber intake (or paradoxically, too much fiber too quickly)
  • Hormonal changes (progesterone slows motility)
  • Underlying conditions (hypothyroidism, diabetes)

Signs of slow motility bloating:

  • Bloating worsens throughout the day
  • Relief after bowel movements
  • Feeling of incomplete evacuation
  • Visible distension (not just gas)

Solutions focus on:

  • Increasing movement and exercise
  • Adequate hydration (8+ cups water daily)
  • Fiber intake optimization
  • Addressing underlying constipation
